As the days fly by there is the continuing dustup between Trump and Pelosi over political tactics! And we find ourselves at round whatever on the who’s going to be the first to fold on this battle of wills. The action in this continuing dustup continues.
The First Meeting
On December 11, 2018 there was a historical row caught on camera in
the Oval Office between Pelosi, Schumer and Trump that foreshadowed the
conflict between the Democrats and Trump. At that time Trump accepted the weight his office places on him.
As Harry Truman so famously said “the buck stops here.” Trump emphatically indicated he would be happy to accept the responsibility for the shutdown if he could not get agreement for, as it was called
then, the wall.
The First Letter
On January 3, 2019 Speaker Pelosi sent a written invitation to President
Trump to present the State of the Union address. The letter Speaker Pelosi sent
Trump is as follows:
“Dear Mr. President:
The Constitution established the legislative, executive and judicial branches as co-
equal branches of government, to be a check and balance of each other. The
Constitution also calls for the President to “from time to time give to the Congress
Information of the State of the Union.”
In the spirit of our Constitution, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union
address before a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 in the
I look forward to welcoming you to the Congress.
(signed) Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House”
Nancy shot the first salvo
On January 16, 2019 Nancy shot the first salvo in this round by rescinding
the invitation to the President to deliver his State of the Union citing lack of
security. Advising that would prevent Trump from giving the State of the Union as planned and requesting he send it to Congress in writing. Her letter cancelling her initial invitation is as follows:
“Dear Mr. President
On January 3rd, it was my privilege as Speaker to invite you to deliver the State of
Union address on January 29th. The Constitution calls for the president “from
time to time to give the Congress Information of the State of the Union.” During
the 19th Century and up until the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, these annual
State of the Union messages were delivered to Congress in writing. And since thestart of modern budgeting in Fiscal Year 1977, a State of the Union address has
never been delivered during a government shutdown.
In September 2018, Secretary Neilsen designated State of the Union as National
Special Security Events (NSSEs), recognizing the need for “the full resources of
the Federal Government to be brought to bear” to ensure the security of these
events. The extraordinary demands presented by NSSEs require weeks of
detailed planning with dozens of agencies working together to prepare for the
safety of all participants.
The US Secret Service was designated as the lead federal agency responsible for
coordinating, planning, exercising and implementing security for National Special
Security Events by Public Law 106-544, December 19, 2000. However, both
Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security have now not been
funded for 26 days now – with critical departments hamstrung by furloughs.
Sadly given the security concerns and unless the government re-opens this week,
I suggest we work together to determine another suitable date after the
government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your
State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th.
Speaker of the House”
Trump, not to be outdone by Nancy
Trump, not to be outdone by Nancy, on January 17, 2019 fired back. Pelosi
had a junket planned going to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan. Pelosi and her entourage were on the bus to get on the military flight when Trump revoked the use of military planes. The baggage that was on the bus was returned to the Capital and a letter was written advising the speaker of the house that military planes were not available for junkets and reminded Mrs. Pelosi that she should be in Washington negotiating an end to the government Shutdown. The president indicated the planes would be available after the shutdown was ended. It has been more entertainment for the American public rather than having any real substance leading toward getting the problem solved for the American economy and the employees who have been affected by this latest and longest government shutdown in America’s history.
The letter Trump sent to inform Pelosi of the revocation of the use of military planes for the planned junket is as follows:
“Dear Madame Speaker :
Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.
In light of the 800,000 great Americans not receiving pay, I am sure you will agree that postponing this public relation event is totally appropriate. I also feel that during this period it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown. Obviously, if you would like make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative. I look forward to seeing you soon and even more forward to watching our open and dangerous Southern Border receiving the attention, funding and security it so desperately deserves!
(signed) Donald J. Trump”
That letter was written on Friday January 17, 2019. Trump followed it up
by a speech given from the oval office on Saturday January 18, 2019 in which he laid out the case for border security and what he was willing to offer Pelosi and her crew.
His speech acknowledged that the situation on the southern border was not
only a security issue but a humanitarian crisis as well. He put forth a proposal from Homeland Security for cutting-edge technology for detecting drugs, weapons, illegal contraband, and many other things. He indicated more agents, immigrations judges and additional bed space to process the sharp increase in unlawful migration fueled by our very strong economy. His proposed plan also included an urgent request for humanitarian assistance and medical support as well as asking Congress to close border security loopholes so that illegal immigrant children can be safely and humanely returned home.
Finally a request for 5.7 billion dollars for a physical barrier, stating that it would be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall, in an attempt to make it more palatable to the Democrats. He advised that was what the border professionals need.
That brings us to the 23rd when Pelosi issues her final letter…so far. It is as
” Dear Mr. President:
When I extended an invitation on January 3rd for you to deliver the State of the Union address, it was on the mutually agreed date January 29th. At that time, there was no thought that the government would still be shut down. In my further correspondence of January 16th, I said we should work together to find a mutually agreeable date when government has re-opened and I hope we can still do that.
I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until the government has opened.
Again, I am loking forward to welcoming you to the House on a mutually agreeabledatefor this address when the government has been opened.
(signed Nancy Pelosi)
Speaker of the House”
It’s got to end sometime, however with the enduring “integrity” the Dems have shown in the past President Trump dares not rescind the Shutdown before any and all of what the Dems have/are promising have been met. So far they are promising nothing.
Yesterday President Trump made a strategic move and announced a temporary reopening of the government to accommodate those whose pay has been impacted. This re-opening will allow the government workers to catch up and it will give the Democrats the opportunity to come to the table and actually engage in some grown up negotiations unless they want to be shown as the obstructionists the currently appear to be.
So this is the latest in the continuing dustup between Trump and Pelosi. More details are sure to surface as time goes on.
